This morning I got out of bed and didn’t feel like zombie. I’d almost forgotten what it was like to be fully awake and aware. I even did a few stretches after breakfast.
Perhaps, I thought, it’s time to start exercising.
Looking for advice online, the expert answers were universal: Get moving, but go slowly, be gentle […]

On Sunday I said that most weight loss schemes and theories are based on poor science. That illustrious standard set, I have a few of my own weight loss theories I’d like to share with the world. The first is especially for post partum mothers.
The tight pants theory.
I could squeeze myself into my pre-pregnancy jeans […]

The first thing my mid-wife and doctor warned me about after birth is that nursing is not a 100% reliable method of birth control.
While breast-feeding exclusively does inhibit ovulation, there’s no way of knowing when ovulation will occur again. Plenty of women do get pregnant, while breast-feeding, just 6 to 8 weeks after last giving […]

I stepped on the scales this morning.
The answer is that I am 8.5 kg heavier after this pregnancy. That doesn’t sound like much. Until you convert it to 18.72 lbs.
Given that most weight loss schemes are based on poor — if any — theories of nutritional science, that they are rip-offs designed to take your […]

An itchy red rash can be one of the side-effects of the post- birth watershed.
The rash tends to be worse at the bra line, the waist band of your pants or where the elastic of your underwear touches the skin. Sweat has a better chance of accumulating in these places and the skin remains damp […]

Today’s Parent magazine is one of my favorite parenting resources, and not just because they’ve paid me to write for them on occasion. I like it because they have an answer to even the most embarrassing questions.
When a mother comes to that 6 to 8 week point in her post partum recovery, the embarrassing questions […]

There comes a time, shortly after birth, when a new mother steps on a set of scales to see just how much weight remains after the little tenant’s eviction. Do it too soon and you might find that the number is the same one you saw at the midwife’s or doctor’s appointment during your last […]

Does anyone else have back pain from the added strain of carrying a baby and a larger bust?
I have, though, discovered a benefit to this otherwise annoying development. It makes for a great optical illusion. The breasts I am now sporting, when clothed in a tight shirt, make my belly (which actually resembles a 2/3rds […]

Two remarkable things happened this weekend:
We put all the toys on the living room floor in boxes so that we could vacuum.
Simultaneously, the baby took a long nap all alone in her crib.
This gave me the chance to lie in the middle of the living room floor to deal with some “abdominal amnesia” through exercise. […]

For the last half of my pregnancy, I had such terrible stomach acid that I stopped eating after 5pm and still had to sleep propped up on five pillows. I ate Rennies and Tums as if they were candy. I was so uncomfortable, that stomach acid was one of the reasons why my midwife and […]
