Baby with Triple E

by Eliza on July 16th, 2008

A little infant was diagnosed with triple E this week in Baldwin County.  For those that don’t know, triple E (Eastern equine encephalitis) has been known to come from mosquito bites. Which means, THEY’RE BACK! I know every year many wonder if we’ll have that mosquito biting virus and if you should worry. My suggestion is be prepared when taking your baby outside, especially if you are in an area known for these insects and tend to come out this season, if you’ve got lots of rain or swamps nearby.

Many believe that because it is summer time they should have their babies run around naked all day and enjoy the sun. While I’ve been known to let them jump in a pool as an infant with no clothes on YEARS ago, I don’t anymore. (too many sickos out there and bugs biting) I’m not saying keep them fully clothed, just a pair of shorts and a top. Babies may even need a hat to keep the burning rays off their soft scalp.

Blog Al:

The mosquito-borne disease was detected in June in two sentinel chickens in the Orange Beach area and one sentinel chicken in the Gulf Shores area.

“With summer in full swing and many people enjoying outdoor activities, it is imperative that residents take every effort to reduce their exposure to mosquitoes,” Baldwin County Health Department Environmentalist Rachel Beck said in a written statement. “Keep your mosquito repellent with you at all times when you are working or recreating outdoors.”

Tips to Try Avoiding Triple E

-  dress properly

-  lather up or spray

-  stay away from areas that have tons of mosquitoes

MYTH: Eat garlic they’ll stay away.

Just because you eat garlic during the day it is NOT going to keep the bugs away. I was told this growing up, so when I had kids I tried having everyone eat tons of garlic. It didn’t work.

Currently there is no cure for the Triple E or West Nile, stay protected this summer season.
