Baby’s 1st Picnic

by Eliza on July 23rd, 2008

Lifestyles Channel is doing a “Picnic Promo” and I decided since I don’t cook unless it comes out of a box I’d talk about picnics.  We’ve always believed in going on picnics and have done it several times a year with our kids since they were little. I’m shocked when I hear that not many do this with their kids. Maybe it was the way I grew up but I definitely do it.

I have learned a few things though when taking a baby on his/her first picnic that I hope will help you out:

1  Dress for the weather-  A hot sunny day is not for a sleeper. Just like winter is not the time to bring him/her out in shorts or a small dress. Yes, the dress may be cute but her little legs are freezing.

2  Carry a blanket-  You never know when you’ll need it. I actually bring two blankets, one is for the ground as I hate the way it feels and won’t torture my newborn on the prickly grass. The other is for keeping them shaded and possibly having to cover up when breastfeeding.

3  Bring something to carry them in- This can be the car seat, stroller or the sling. I love wearing my baby but after a while they do get heavy and this is the perfect time a fold out stroller comes in handy. It is also harder to run into a stroller than it is a car seat. I remember too many times the hubby’s squadron would play ball or frisbee and almost fall on top of the car seat, never the stroller though.

4  Food and drinks- It gets hot and even a baby needs something to cool off with. I always make sure to get a few water bottles just in case. Sometimes I make them drink little bits and others I wipe them down to make sure they stay cool. But don’t forget stuff for yourself too, just because it is a picnic doesn’t mean they’ll think of a breastfeeding mom or just a mom that brought along kids that can’t drink sodas or beer.

5  Bring some toys and a book- Babies like to have stuff to do too besides being passed from one person to the next.

It doesn’t take much to prepare for a picnic, after all it doesn’t take a lot to excite a baby at a picnic, look at the video below:
