Blogs I Read: Opposites Attract

by kate baggott on July 11th, 2007

Three of my best blog-friends write on completely opposite topics. Kerri and Baldman write Marriage, Actually while Christina writes Solomother. I often read the blogs right after each other. While I love all three of the personalities who drive these two blogs, I think reading them together helps me keep an objective view of all relationship issues except, of course, my own. Together, I think the two blogs are great reads for new mothers who own relationships are in a state of new baby flux.

Baldman and Kerri are high school sweethearts who have been married for ten years and have three children. Their relationship is not perfect, I mean, they’ve argued about how to cook spaghetti for crying out loud. At the same time, they know they are each other’s greatest fan and best friend. It’s solid. It’s the kind of relationship I couldn’t have had for the first 25 years of my life due to selfishness and then felt I didn’t deserve for years after that. They’re a funny pair, a sarcastic pair, but they don’t have any of the bitterness that those of us who have been through multiple relationship disappointments often have.

Not that Christina at Solomother is bitter either. In fact, she fights that kind of attitude. She gets angry as she deals with daily financial pressures, childcare problems and political hatred of single mothers, but that only makes sense. The ultimate message is that there is a solution to every problem and nothing makes a life of relationship torment, lovelessness or even abuse worth suffering.

Together, this on-going story of marriage and other chapter of living post-divorce, renew my faith in romance and of self-determination. They say opposites attract and I think this combination of reads reinforces the truth of that old cliché.
