Babies, Marriage & Family Planning

by kate baggott on April 26th, 2007

New babies (not to mention toddlers, pre-schoolers, school children, teenagers and college-age children) can be tough on marriages.

Second, third, and further babies are even harder. Anecdotal evidence (OK, the old wives tale) suggests that the more often you get pregnant, the better your body gets at becoming pregnant. It’s the old “pregnancy begets pregnancy” saying.

And while I think our society is very good about telling teenage girls to keep their knees clamped together, or to practice safe sex all the time, very few people talk about family planning within a marriage. And yet, having one’s husband in the same bed is much more convenient than waiting for someone to ask you out on Saturday night. It also means that no matter how many children you have, you’re never more than a glass of wine away from an unplanned pregnancy.

Can you tell I am having a few problems relaxing these days?

It’s enough to make me consider permanent birth control.
