C-Section Care

by Eliza on May 2nd, 2008

Did you know that out of all pregnancies one out of every three will end up with a c-section? That’s a pretty high estimate if you ask me, so we are going to cover a bit of that this week because many of those 1 will be a first time, which means they need all the advice they can get. Did you have a c-section? Why not leave a tip or your experience in the comment section to help others out.

Tips:

-  Ask for help. There are actually some women (including myself) that will try to do everything for themselves. DON’T. Ask for help, not only have you just given birth but you went through a surgery as well.

-  try walking a bit, however only if your doctor says it is okay. By walking it’ll help speed up the recovery process. But no jumping, jogging or running. Walking will also help any gas or abdominal pains.

-  Keep the incision area dry.

-  Don’t scratch. Many say that the stitch area itches, do not scratch it not only can you tear it but you can infect the area.

- Keep a close eye on the incision area and watch for any changes. If anything look strange or frightening or puss coming out, contact your doctor.

-  If you are breastfeeding keep your child off your abdominal area. If needed a nurse can instruct you how to breastfeed after a c-section.

Make sure you get bed rest for at least 4 or 5 hours after the c-section before attempting to get up.

Go for looser fitting clothes around the scar

Wash that area a lot to prevent infection.

Do not feel bad because you didn’t do the whole natural birth with no drugs & angels singing thing. There is more than enough mommy guilt waiting for you without starting this early.

Feel pleased you missed out on a lot of pain.

Take the recommended pain meds! You’re not weak if you take them, they help you recover faster. It’ll help you & your baby if you are able to recover quicker.

I went through labor & a c-section (al in one birth). I don’t think a c-section misses out on any pain. Those first couple of days after surgery are painful.
