Charity Campaign Spotlight: KIVA

by kate baggott on April 5th, 2007

Babylune’s Mothering Sunday to Mothers’ Day Charity Campaign started on March 18th and runs until May 13. This is the second of a three-part series of posts highlighting the three charities selected for the campaign. The charity with the most votes as chosen by readers voting in the poll, will recieve $1 for every 1000 page views served up during the campaign.

KIVA is an innovative organisation with excellent ideas and a direct path to helping those who need it most. I’ve chosen to feature it in our charity campaign because micro-economics has changed the way people think about poverty, business and the empowerment of women in the develping world.

Donations to KIVA take the form of small loans to small business people around the world. As their projects become profitable, the loans are re-paid and the donation is passed along to the next person. In other words, the donation doesn’t help just one person, but many. KIVA has projects running all over the world. From the Ukraine to Togo, to Ghana and Samoa.

Two things make me extremely comfortable working with KIVA.

I can choose the project our donation will support in order to help a mother out of her struggles. KIVA also uses technology in simple, but effective ways. Their site accepts payments by paypal, which has lower fees and, arguably, better security than credit card vendor solutions. I can also choose to receive communication only by email. It really bothers me when charities spend so much of the money people donate on glossy brochures and TV commercials asking us for more.
