Creative Parenting or Dumb Kids?
Every once in a while, I get a parenting suggestion that makes me exclaim:
“Your kids actually fall for that?!”
Like, giving your kids multi-vitamins that dissolve in water with a fizz and telling them it’s orange pop.
Even my two year-old wouldn’t accept that after the very first drop of the first sip.
I find that my kids prefer the truth to being fooled.
How about yours?

I do my best to promote a healthy lifestyle, which means NOT disguising healthy things. As well, my son doesn’t drink pop, so a fizzy vitamin wouldn’t work for him. I chase him around with a liquid one, but he hates that too, so I just try to make sure his vitamins come from his food.

I try to make sure of that too, but where we live there is so little sunshine in mid-winter that kids have to take vitamin D. They both just take the tablets without a fuss.

my son loves his vitamins and usually cries for another! He doesn’t get fooled easily though. He knows when I “hide” those veggie purees in his foods and refuses to eat them. I’d love to send him to Jessica Seinfeld’s house to see if he would eat what she cooks up!

The hiding trick is another one that my kids don’t fall for either. It isn’t just about health-related topics, though. There’s a whole field of creative discipline that seems to thrive on the assumption that kids are stupid.

Not only are they incredibly smart, they need to be treated with respect. They also have to learn the truth of the fact that it’s good to try new experiences, and new flavours…. they don’t have to like it, but it’s important to expand the boundaries.
