Taking a Bath in Peace

Once you become a mom there are many things you will share with your children, one of which happens to be your privacy. The other? Oh well that’s a long list: bed, time, food, thoughts, just about anything you can share with your child they’ll get. But the one thing I have grown to want back is my time in the bathroom.

At least twice a month, I sneak into the bathroom, run the hot water, toss in the bubbles and grab a good book before locking the door. This is normally done right after I’ve put the youngest to bed and sent the other three to clean their rooms. I figure I’ll have 15 minutes at the most, but I’ll try staying in for half and hour, even if I’m doing nothing more than counting in my head because I forgot the book before dashing in.

I swear it never gets that long though, the minute that door is locked the world has ended, someone has misplaced the mom and they’ve called on each other to figure out where she is. Mom isn’t far, I promise just in the land of dreaming and silence. A place where only mom wants to be, all by herself and maybe a moment to pee. A place that’s quiet and not ruled by children, somewhere she doesn’t hear screaming and telling. I don’t want to hear someone pulled my hair, I lost my homework or Little A needs a new diaper. Don’t get me wrong I love them all, but sometimes I want a few minutes of private.

So tell me now, if you’re a mom that gets a few minutes of silence…how do you do it? Do you take a bath without the audience? Ever get a moment of peeing in peace?

‘ve had one bath on my own, with no interruptions in the last 4 years and that one I only managed because I was in hospital overnight. So even then the lovely silence, smelling bubbles etc was not allowed and of course every 5 minutes a nurse knocked the door to check I was ok. So really it’s been over 4 yrs since I had a bath alone and in silence.
You’re doing better than me lol.

I get peace when the baby is napping and the 6 year old is at school and the hubby is at work. Sometimes I do something besides work.

I wait till they are in bed to get in the bath cause if I don’t they’ll just hop right in.

I remember that! Little fingers squiggling under the bathroom door trying to get in … but I only ever locked the door when my husband was home, in case something catastrophic happened (three children under four - I’m sure you understand).

These days I get to have a bath by myself, but I do get up at least an hour earlier than everyone else and I love the peace of the very early morning.
