The Upside of Morning Sickness

by kate baggott on June 25th, 2007

My mother and my sister had morning sickness really, really badly with all of their pregnancies. At one point while she was pregnant with me, my mother went down to 98lbs (I was almost 9lbs at birth).

Sure, I had some bad days, but while morning sickness may have made me lose a few meals, it never made me miss one. Turns out, my mother and sister may have been lucky to have those severe bouts of morning sickness.  They’re less likely to get breast cancer as a result.

A recent study of 3000 women led by David Jaworowicz Jr, from the University of Buffalo, New York, has found that women who throw up when they experience morning sickness are 30% less likely to get breast cancer than women who have never had it.

It’s the hCG hormone produced by the placenta that is thought to protect against cancer.

“In-vitro studies show this hormone involves several activities that have potential protective effects,” Dr. Jaworowicz told the Scotsman.

What if you had morning sickness with one and then not with the second?? I put it down to being too busy with the two year old to find time to throw up, the second time around! Hopefully the morning sickness experienced with the first will protect me to some degree. :)

How much throwing up does one need to have done? Will once do? Or is more better?
