What is the Safe Haven Law?

by Eliza on July 20th, 2008

With so many babies tossed in trash cans, bags or left on door steps I think it is time to remind those new moms, or pregnant moms about the options that is out there. Please, for the sake of the baby protect it from things that will harm him/her. Just because you don’t want the baby or are shocked to find out you are pregnant, doesn’t mean someone else wouldn’t want him/her. Give this baby a chance.

Believe it or not you can give your baby up for adoption safely, you can even do this while you are pregnant. However, if you find yourself deciding that for whatever reason you don’t want your baby after he/she is born, you can still give it up.

According to Wikipedia:

Safe Haven law is the popular name for United States‘ laws that decriminalize leaving unharmed infants with statutorily designated private persons so that the child becomes a ward of the state.  Police stations, hospitals, rescue squads, and fire houses are all typical locations to which the safe haven law applies.

Keep in mind that every state is different and you may want to touch up and read what your state believes. I will be following up on this and try to keep it as much up-to-date as possible.
