Where Women & Babies Get to Stay in Hospital

I had to read this announcement from the Irish news twice. Women, it seems, requested that visiting hours in the one of country’s main maternity hospitals be reduced.

  • “After a woman has had a baby or an operation, the first few days are key for optimum rest and recovery,” said the master of the National Maternity Hospital, Dr Michael Robson.

“Our patients have told us that they would prefer only a few visitors, their immediate family, during this time to give them the chance to recuperate.

“Assistance from extended family and friends is more appropriate when the new family has had time to bond themselves or a patient has had time to rest from surgery.”

While partners and children can visit mother and new baby when they wish, others can croon over the new baby only between 6 and 8:30 in the evening and from 3 to 4 pm on weekends and holidays.

Why did the news surprise me? In Canada, where I am from, new mothers and babies are usually at home within a few hours of birth. Where I live in Germany, people either go home after a few hours or can spend up to six days in hospital. When the baby was born, we had to stay for the weekend due to complications. I wasn’t really prepared to stay, but the worst part wasn’t not having my toothbrush. I was expected to take care of the baby even though I was in the hospital and no one visited me!

Still, I do agree that the best time to see a new baby and mother are after they come home from the hospital. And bring a meal when you visit!
